THE DRIVER’S GUIDE / FLORIDA

Life insurance.
Clearer choices.

A practical starting point for company drivers, owner operators, independent contractors and their families. Understand the questions that matter before choosing coverage.

Ask Alex a question ↗

01 / COMPANY DRIVERS

Know what rides
with your job.

If your employer offers life insurance, read the benefit summary and policy documents. Start with these questions:

  • What is the death benefit, and who pays the premiums?
  • Does coverage change if I leave the company or change roles?
  • Can I keep or convert it, and under what deadlines and costs?
  • Is the amount enough for my family’s current needs?

Individual life insurance and employer benefits have different terms. Don’t cancel existing coverage before understanding any replacement and confirming it is in force.

02 / OWNER OPERATORS

Your business.
Your household.
Two conversations.

Think separately about the people who depend on your income and the obligations tied to your business.

  • Which household expenses would continue without your income?
  • What business debts or commitments would need attention?
  • Are there partners or agreements that need a separate professional review?
  • What premium fits your budget through busy and slower months?

Business ownership, beneficiaries, and tax or legal arrangements can be complex. Bring those questions to the appropriate legal or tax professional along with your insurance conversation.

03 / THE PEOPLE BACK HOME

Start with a name.
Then the numbers.

Think about who you want to help protect. Consider everyday expenses, a mortgage or rent, childcare, debts and future goals. Then account for savings and coverage you already have.

A beneficiary is the person or entity you name to receive the policy’s death benefit. Family changes are a good reason to review those choices. Special situations, including naming minors, deserve professional guidance.

There’s no single coverage amount that fits every driver or family. Your responsibilities, existing resources and budget are the starting point.

04 / WHAT YOU’RE COMPARING

Life insurance,
in plain language.

Term Life Insurance

Coverage for a selected period. A death benefit is payable if the insured dies during that period, subject to policy conditions and exclusions. Ask about premiums, renewal costs and any conversion options.

Whole Life Insurance

Permanent coverage that typically offers fixed premiums and guaranteed cash value features, subject to the policy’s terms and required premiums. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer’s claims paying ability. Loans or withdrawals can affect policy values and benefits.

Indexed Universal Life

Permanent coverage with flexibility and potential interest credits linked to an external index. Caps, floors, participation rates and policy charges affect results. A floor on credited interest does not stop policy charges from reducing cash value. The policy is not a direct investment in the index and may require additional premiums to remain in force.

Trucking work, driving history, health, age, lifestyle, policy type and coverage amount may be relevant to an insurer’s review. Requirements vary. Being a truck driver does not, by itself, establish eligibility, rates or approval.

Life insurance is separate from truck, cargo, commercial liability, workers’ compensation, health and disability insurance. Benefits for an accident or inability to work are not automatically included in a life policy.

06 / QUESTIONS I’M HAPPY TO TALK THROUGH

Let’s clear a few things up.

How much life insurance do I need?

Start with the responsibilities you want covered: household income, housing, debts, childcare and future goals. Then consider savings and coverage you already have. We can discuss these needs alongside a premium that fits your budget.

Can truck drivers qualify for life insurance?

Truck drivers may have options, depending on the insurer and individual circumstances. Occupation, driving history, age, health and the coverage requested may affect underwriting. Approval and rates are never guaranteed.

Can I get coverage if I have medical conditions?

A medical condition does not automatically mean there are no options. Insurers evaluate conditions differently and may request medical information through their secure process. Eligibility, premiums and available products depend on the details of the application.

What’s the difference between term and permanent coverage?

Term life covers a selected period. Whole life and indexed universal life are forms of permanent coverage designed for longer term needs, with different premium, cash value and policy requirements. The right starting point depends on your goals and budget.

Does my life insurance follow me if I change jobs?

An individual life insurance policy generally isn’t tied to a particular employer, but it must remain in force under its terms. Employer provided coverage may have different continuation or conversion rules. Review both before making a change.

How does the application process work?

We begin with your goals and the available options. If you choose to apply, you complete the insurer’s secure application. The insurer reviews the required information, may request additional records or an exam, and determines eligibility, premiums and terms. An application alone does not put coverage in force.
